So I haven't posted on here for awhile. I've been busy touring with Neon Trees. My music has taken a backseat, but I'm not stopping and I have you guys haven't forgotten. I've got some demos with scratch vocals from the Winter EP (Which may not be released anymore...more on that later) But I still wanted to share the songs one way or another.

I thought I'd keep this blog strictly Spiral Diary and not personal, but Spiral Diary IS personal to me. So nothing should stop me from posting about my adventures on the road with Neon Trees. But make sure to check out the 2 new demos at www.myspace.com/spiraldiary

Touring with Neon Trees

Big news everybody,

I was recently offered the opportunity to go out on a 3 week tour playing 2nd guitar for Neon Trees. For those of you who don't know Neon Trees, they're a Provo/Southern California band who have been playing around locally for years. I've always enjoyed their music and they've recently had some exciting developments. They have a new EP "Start A Fire" coming out this month (Nov. 20th on myspace. myspace.com/neontrees) and then a full length "In Our Youth" in April on Mercury Records. I'm very excited about getting out on the road and playing music full time for a few weeks. It will be a nice break and another great learning experience for me.

Unfortunately, it delays the Winter EP I've been working on. The writing is nearly finished, I just need to record vocals and do a little trimming to a couple songs. Hopefully it will be out early next year.

This CD was a cringefest. Emo, as a genre, is sort of embarrassing by definition, even at its best, and bad emo music is so mortifying that it makes me want to curl up in a fetal position. This was a song I just recorded tonight...It was written maybe 4 days ago. I've been pretty happy with it. Forgive the poor audio qualtiy/poor performace. I just wanted to have SOMETHING to show you guys. So this is a watered-down, late night live recording. The song doesn't have a title yet...it'll be "Burning Bridges" for now.

...well things haven't gone as smoothly as planned. Having a house to myself didn't provide as much free time as I had hoped. Most time was spent moving things from Provo to Highland, then setting up.... then dealing with pets....then picking people up from the airport...then it's suddenly the weekend and I have shows....and so on.

Once things settled down the beginning of this week, swine flu hit me. I've been doing nothing but playing Plants vs. Zombies for 4 straight days. Quarantined to a bedroom upstairs without any equipment. So how much progress has been made? Hardly any. It's what I get for writing a blog about recording before I STARTED to do any recording. From now on, let's talk about what I HAVE done and not what I PLAN ON doing. Because no matter what you have planned, it doesn't always work out. Then you look foolish for talking about it. Anyway, I'm rambling.

This is what I have done:

I was able to get to my desktop yesterday and do some mixing. I was surprised at how much I was able to refine/improve the mixes with only the same tracks I had from before. I squeezed as much as I could out of them. Trimming some songs down, tinkering with the order, revising lyrics. I'm pretty happy with how some of the mixes are shaping up. Right now, my favorite is "Perfect Circle." I think I finally finalized the lyrics to that song as well. Still not set on the title thanks to the Tool side-project of the same name.

Oh yeah, and "Forgotten"...very excited about that one. I'll get to work on putting together more slideshows.

Finally getting to some REAL recording...

I've got a few days off from work and a house to myself, so I'm hoping to get a lot done and have something to show you guys in a week or so (though the upcoming Brand New and Straylight Run shows might distract me a little...).

I'm most excited about a new song titled "Rough Draft/Forgotten" right now. Anyone who made it to open mic at Velour tuesday or the show @ Muse Friday, got to hear it. I've received some good feedback, so I'm excited to get vocals and electric guitar added to it. Anyway, hopefully October will be a productive month for me. Stay tuned.

I know I'm technically posting this on October SECOND, but I don't care. I'm still going to pretend this was posted early enough to be on the same date as the song title...

Last year, I was living temporarily in Guthrie, KY (near the border of Tennessee, about 45 minutes from Nashville). I was there with "E for Explosion." We stayed in Guthrie in between tours and had a lot of down time.

In Guthrie, we didn't have cell phone service, the internet was slow and spotty, and it was too hot and humid during the day to do anything outside. So most nights, I'd take a late walk down a 1 - 1 1/2 mile sidewalk/bike trail to the grocery store (to buy a coke from the vending machine).

These nightly walks were about all I had. But I have to admit, there is hardly anything creepier than a cornfield at night. And with all the Guthrie folklore and ghost stories (Flea Market, the Bell Witch, The "Beast"), it made it even worse. With my iPod, I was usually able to ignore the fear enough to make it there and back.

Anyway, now to the song...this is about one of the night walks on 10/01/08. It was just a particularly bad night. But due to the circumstances, I felt reckless as opposed to scared like usual. That's what the song is about...

I took some pictures on one of the walks and put them in this slideshow with the rough instrumental demo of "October First"...I'm hoping the imagery can help enhance the story in the song.

So it seems like a good time of year to resurrect a song from last year.

The lyrics for this song were written around September 2008 (Completed and co-written with Sydney Rees in November/December '08). The same time these pictures were taken . I was on the road with E for Explosion and we had a "West Coast Tour" that stopped by Utah in September around my birthday. It was a bittersweet visit, and very difficult for me at the time. That's what the song is about. Having to leave friends and loved ones behind all over again. About a visit that was too short. Home for less than 24 hours after being away for 4 months...then gone again.

Anyway, in honor of it's one-year anniversary, I thought I'd put together a cheap little slideshow from the "West Coast Tour" and let people hear a rare b-side they can't hear anywhere else. Let me know what you think.

Hey everybody,

So I've had a little trouble writing and finishing up lyrics for songs, but I think I've come out of it. I just need to turn off the TV every once and awhile and do something productive. I'm still working on the Winter EP occasionally. Originally, the plan was an Oct. 1st CD release because that date has some significance to me and the CD in particular. However, I'm thinking it might be too close to the last CD release, which was just 2 1/2 months ago in June. I'm hoping to book a show the 1st or maybe that weekend where I'll headline and give people a little preview of the songs that are going to be on the new EP. Keep checking back for that. So there's a concert going on next month with Taking Back Sunday and Blink 182. I grew up listening to Blink 182, they inspired all my early bands. Judges' Choice!

I'm happy to say that I was picked as the winner of the "Judges' Choice" for this summer's Songwriter Showdown. "Audience Choice" went to Willy Eklof who put on a great set. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that came out to support. But most of all, the people at Muse. Muse is a perfect atmosphere for me...and they have great grilled cheese!

Also, I'd like to thank the other people who played. And did a GREAT job. I'm pretty disappointed that I won actually because I like being a part of these Songwriter Showdowns because you get a chance to be exposed to new talent/crowds. There's also none of the hostile feel you sometimes get with Battle of the Bands. Everyone's very talented and very supportive. I'll definitely still attend future showdowns. This is getting long. I need to get better about writing on this thing, but I'm not sure what people want to hear about. Song meanings? Recording updates? Show stuff? Anyway, I thought I'd update you guys on what I've been doing.

Last night, I wiped the dust off the Winter EP mixes and started doing some editing. Some songs are still not completed because I'm having a little bit of writer's block. Not enough drama going on lately. And I think songs about being bored are probably boring. I'm also going to start cleaning up some B-sides so they'll sound respectable when I decide to release them after the Winter EP.

Also, I listened through my first album "Wake of Someday" today. It's been awhile. I guess that cd's not as awful as I thought. You guys should try to make it to a show because there are only about 40 copies left and I'm never going to re-press that cd (...unless maybe they're suddenly high in demand, but I don't foresee that happening). If you're too lazy to come to a show, you can still download all the tracks off my myspace. There's a link in the "sounds like" section.

The shows were great. Last night at Muse was awesome. 3 Blocks From Heartache, Nate Baldwin, and Bynow played great sets. And it was cool to have a few people there who were singing along to almost every song. Lots of fun. Can't wait to play Muse again in mid-July.

So here's a little something I've come up with over the last couple of days. It's definitely cheesy, but I had to honor the man who made GREAT music.

The Fall/Winter 2nd EP

So for those of you who didn't know, "Beautiful Divide" was the first of my two part series, "Better know an EP". In this installment, we'll be learning about the Fall/Winter EP I'm working on. Go fightin' autumns! (Colbert Report, anyone?)

In the beginning, I had around 25 songs or so and I wasn't sure I wanted to do a full length. Also, I wasn't sure all of the songs would fit well together. Then I had the idea to split the songs into two categories: Summer and Winter. The songs that ended up on "Beautiful Divide" were the obvious summer songs. Brighter, bouncier, more acoustic, etc.

I still have a ton of songs left over for the winter/fall EP which I'm hoping to release in October/November. This next cd will be a little more melancholy, dark, with more piano/electric guitar in place of acoustic. I almost feel like I should've waited and done the happier EP AFTER the downer, but there are still some songs I feel really good about that will be on the next EP. Hopefully, it's just as well received. (I can never tell if people prefer heavy/emotional or light/happy. So I'll just do BOTH)

Unfortunately, due to the constraints of time/space on the CD, I wasn't able to include specific thank you's and lyrics. That's the point of this blog. For things I'm not able to say on stage/in the liner notes. So here they are:

Allison Hamnett: For helping me with the balloons.

Ask for the Future: For playing. For putting me on their awesome cd release show even though I couldn't bring any new fans for them.

Ben Sorensen: For mastering the cd. It was short notice and a quick turnaround. Sounds great.

Cailie Ercanbrack: For helping me promote.

Chad Braithwaite: For taking great pics. Being a good guy and designing some awesome posters.

Cody Farnsworth: For being a crash test dummy. Being able to listen to countless demos of the same songs over and over and somehow manage to not hate it. Also, for helping choose the final track listing. "Boomerang" wouldn't have made it onto the cd without his vote.

Corey Fox: For giving Utah the best venue in the state. Also, giving me a place to test out my new stuff (open mic) and just a great place to see great bands. And for helping me brainstorm epic ways to make the cd release something to remember.

Dad: For providing the great video footage of the CD Release.

Dazh Love: For being supportive and helping with merch.

Drew Hamnett: For helping me pick the final track list. You saved "Kentucky" from getting the axe.

Dustin Plake: For playing the show, always being great, and for all the good times we've had at Muse.

John Allred: For always being supportive and teaching.

Katie Hunsaker: For always taking pictures at shows.

Lisa George: For helping me promote.

Maile Hamnett: For helping with the balloons/putting up with my merch-area-hogging.

Mark @ ELS Productions: For saving my life. For the fastest turn-around on digi-packs he's ever ever ever done. I wouldn't have had ANY cds at the show if it wasn't for this man going above and beyond.

Mom: For putting up with the noise always coming from the basement and for always being supportive of my foolish dreams.

Nate Smeding: For helping me pick the final track list: And for being an amazing drummer, as well as being one of the most positive/awesome people I know.

Natty Coleman: For all the graphic design/artwork you did for the cd. I've never been a part of such a visually amazing cd. It looks better than I could've possibly imagined. And I don't care what you say, I still owe you money.

Sheyn Love: For always being supportive of my music. For providing his incredible musical talents to the show, and making the songs sound even better live.

Riley Hamnett: For helping me figure out the final track order. And for letting me pick his brain about booking/myspace/promotion.

Sam Sorensen: For pointing me in the direction of his brother, so I could have a more polished CD. And for being a good friend and a great musician.

Shirts Illustrated/Teara: For helping me get t-shirts done for the first time ever. They look amazing. Also, thanks for putting up with my obsessive perfectionist-tendencies.

Tacia Coleman: For helping me with the balloons.

The Trademark: For playing. For taking me out on the road with them and teaching me most of what I know. Also, for being the sweetest band around.

Trista Markland: For putting up with my ultra-stress around the merch area and letting me steal the whole table.

Hey everybody,

I'm starting this blog to keep track of recording/shows. I should've made this forever ago, but better now than never. Keep reading for my thoughts/lyrics/and maybe I'll post some demos/rarities etc.
