Things are going great out here on the road with Neon Trees. Having a lot of fun and getting to know and fully appreciate Inward Eye and Nico Vega. They both put on a VERY good show. Make sure to follow on twitter for more comments, updates, and pics.

Touring with Neon Trees

Big news everybody,

I was recently offered the opportunity to go out on a 3 week tour playing 2nd guitar for Neon Trees. For those of you who don't know Neon Trees, they're a Provo/Southern California band who have been playing around locally for years. I've always enjoyed their music and they've recently had some exciting developments. They have a new EP "Start A Fire" coming out this month (Nov. 20th on myspace. myspace.com/neontrees) and then a full length "In Our Youth" in April on Mercury Records. I'm very excited about getting out on the road and playing music full time for a few weeks. It will be a nice break and another great learning experience for me.

Unfortunately, it delays the Winter EP I've been working on. The writing is nearly finished, I just need to record vocals and do a little trimming to a couple songs. Hopefully it will be out early next year.

But here are more details on the tour:

w/ NICO VEGA & INWARD EYE

11/27 - MESA, AZ
11/29 - LAS CRUCES, NM
12/1 - DALLAS, TX
12/2 - BILOXI, MS
12/3 - JACKSONVILLE, FL
12/5 - ATLANTA, GA
12/6 - CHARLOTTE, NC
12/7 - WASHINGTON D.C.
12/9 - PHILADELPHIA, PA
12/10 - CAMBRIDGE, MA
12/11 - NEW YORK, NY
12/13 - CLEVELAND, OH
12/14 - DETROIT, MI
12/15 - CHICAGO, IL
12/18 - DENVER, CO
12/19 - ALBUQUERQUE, NM
12/20 - LAS VEGAS, NV
12/31 - SALT LAKE CITY, UT

For more accurate info, go to myspace.com/neontrees

I'll probably put the dates up on my myspace as well. Anyway, stay tuned for videos/updates from the road!

SLUG Magazine Review

My first review by an outsider! A critic who has never met me or heard my music before. Here's what they said:

"Spiral Diary = Dashboard Confessional + Saves the Day + Plain White T’s
This CD was a cringefest. Emo, as a genre, is sort of embarrassing by definition, even at its best, and bad emo music is so mortifying that it makes me want to curl up in a fetal position. I don’t understand––why did this even get made? Why did anyone think that lyrics like “If it seems too good to be true, / it’s probably too good to be true” needed to be sung by a dude with an annoyingly nasal breathy voice? Why, then, were flaccid, mealy acoustic guitar chords added? The whole venture is just confusing and awkward. –Cléa Major"

...noted.

I think the blurbs on my bio will have to be :

"...too good to be true..."

"This CD was ...sung by a dude with ...voice ...chords"

"Spiral Diary = ...Saves the Day"

"This CD ...is ...acoustic"

"...I ...like ...nasal ...hole venture ...s"

"This CD ...makes me want to curl up in ...an ...acoustic guitar"

"This ...whole venture is ...Major"

"...I don't understand ...lyrics ...it's ...confusing"

"This CD was ...Emo ...at its best"

"...anyone ...that ...like ...s ...a dude ...is ...awkward"

"This CD was ...ass..."

"...I ...probably ...needed to be ...a dude"

"This CD ...makes me ...whole"

"...music is ...mortifying ...it makes me ...mad..."

"I ...think ...it seems too good to be true ...with ...Clea Major"

"Why ...dude?

"This CD ...makes me ...flaccid"

"...r ...o ...n ...b ...ur ...g ...u ...n ...d ...y ...?"

It's fun playing the "make-a-blurb" game. YOU try it! Leave your comments with your best blurbs. Remember, it's gotta be in chronological order!!

love,

Perfect Circle

The games are over
The stadium lights go out
The lot is dark, everyone has gone home

I wear three layers
But the air still chills my bones
I can't keep warm until we're in each others' arms

I don't care if my entire body goes numb
All I need to feel right now is whole

We are a perfect circle of fabric and limbs
Legs and arms tied up and tangled in an elegant dance

The speakers sing words
Specifically for me
Your voice rings out in such a beautiful melody

I don't care if my tired jaw goes dumb
All I need to say before is "Don't go"

We are a perfect circle of fabric and limbs
Legs and arms tied up and tangled in an elegant dance
Our hearts protected by an autumn blanket
A wall of ribs and skin defending our beating romance

I can't explain this enchanting scene and sentiment
This attraction and attachment is all that makes sense
We kiss like legends stolen from old fashioned pages
Adapted, then translated for the camera lens

Forgotten/Rough Draft Youtube

Break out your markers and connect the dots
Along my cut and corroded chin
Draw a long, broad, crooked line
Highlight the flaws and potmarks in my weathered skin

My closest friends have always been masks and disguises
My greatest threats have always been cameras and reflections

I tell myself "I can do better than this"
I tell myself "No need to settle for less"

Break out the camouflage and hit the deck
Because poison's pumping out of these pores
I try to conceal imperfections
Always screaming for attention
These two sides are at war

My complexion is two shades of color: fragile white and irritated red
I cover up these blemishes with liquid paper and red pens
I am a rough draft
Proofread by the professor
He sent me back smeared with corrections and a note that read:

"Stop kidding yourself, you can't do better than this.
It's time to settle for less."

I forget as much as I am forgotten

New Song/Video

This was a song I just recorded tonight...It was written maybe 4 days ago. I've been pretty happy with it. Forgive the poor audio qualtiy/poor performace. I just wanted to have SOMETHING to show you guys. So this is a watered-down, late night live recording. The song doesn't have a title yet...it'll be "Burning Bridges" for now.

Our cease-fire treaty has no signatures
It's smoldering with the ash and embers
Our doves of peace don't flap their wings
They don't bring serenity and they don't sing

I am the only one to blame

Our olive branch sits inside a garbage can
Next to discarded gifts and our old plans
The cure to our disease is swirling down the drain
Bite down on your knuckles, try to numb the pain

I'm tired of burning all these bridges every time I am afraid
It's my own fire
I'm tired of being the victim and villain in this game of mine
I am the only one to blame

Our reunion's cancelled due to violent hail
Your invitation was lost in the mail anyway
Our binding contract was rendered void
When your trust and confidence were both destroyed

I am the only one to blame

Remember that whole thing about REAL recording?

...well things haven't gone as smoothly as planned. Having a house to myself didn't provide as much free time as I had hoped. Most time was spent moving things from Provo to Highland, then setting up.... then dealing with pets....then picking people up from the airport...then it's suddenly the weekend and I have shows....and so on.

Once things settled down the beginning of this week, swine flu hit me. I've been doing nothing but playing Plants vs. Zombies for 4 straight days. Quarantined to a bedroom upstairs without any equipment. So how much progress has been made? Hardly any. It's what I get for writing a blog about recording before I STARTED to do any recording. From now on, let's talk about what I HAVE done and not what I PLAN ON doing. Because no matter what you have planned, it doesn't always work out. Then you look foolish for talking about it. Anyway, I'm rambling.

This is what I have done:

I was able to get to my desktop yesterday and do some mixing. I was surprised at how much I was able to refine/improve the mixes with only the same tracks I had from before. I squeezed as much as I could out of them. Trimming some songs down, tinkering with the order, revising lyrics. I'm pretty happy with how some of the mixes are shaping up. Right now, my favorite is "Perfect Circle." I think I finally finalized the lyrics to that song as well. Still not set on the title thanks to the Tool side-project of the same name.

Oh yeah, and "Forgotten"...very excited about that one. I'll get to work on putting together more slideshows.

Finally getting to some REAL recording...

I've got a few days off from work and a house to myself, so I'm hoping to get a lot done and have something to show you guys in a week or so (though the upcoming Brand New and Straylight Run shows might distract me a little...).

I'm most excited about a new song titled "Rough Draft/Forgotten" right now. Anyone who made it to open mic at Velour tuesday or the show @ Muse Friday, got to hear it. I've received some good feedback, so I'm excited to get vocals and electric guitar added to it. Anyway, hopefully October will be a productive month for me. Stay tuned.

Dave

P.S. Hey Chance, I'm "in the studio"!

October First

I know I'm technically posting this on October SECOND, but I don't care. I'm still going to pretend this was posted early enough to be on the same date as the song title...

Last year, I was living temporarily in Guthrie, KY (near the border of Tennessee, about 45 minutes from Nashville). I was there with "E for Explosion." We stayed in Guthrie in between tours and had a lot of down time.

In Guthrie, we didn't have cell phone service, the internet was slow and spotty, and it was too hot and humid during the day to do anything outside. So most nights, I'd take a late walk down a 1 - 1 1/2 mile sidewalk/bike trail to the grocery store (to buy a coke from the vending machine).

These nightly walks were about all I had. But I have to admit, there is hardly anything creepier than a cornfield at night. And with all the Guthrie folklore and ghost stories (Flea Market, the Bell Witch, The "Beast"), it made it even worse. With my iPod, I was usually able to ignore the fear enough to make it there and back.

Anyway, now to the song...this is about one of the night walks on 10/01/08. It was just a particularly bad night. But due to the circumstances, I felt reckless as opposed to scared like usual. That's what the song is about...

I took some pictures on one of the walks and put them in this slideshow with the rough instrumental demo of "October First"...I'm hoping the imagery can help enhance the story in the song.

Lyrics:

Follow the trail
The bike path I have walked along 100 times this year
I want you to know that I feel no fear
But the fields have been cut down since I was last here

Continue on the shoulder
Heading for the stateline
I'm not sure what I expect to find
But I want you to know that it's cold for the first time

It's time to turn around now
Because nothing turned out the way I had not planned
Caution lights flicker behind me
My shadows dance on the road
...which one am I?

I want to stare death in the eyes
I want to look down on that great "beast"
I want to laugh in its face and say
"There's nothing left for you to take from me."

Standing in these empty parking spaces
The only places that I can be reached
I need to hear a voice
I need a comforting noise

Limited Time Birthday

So it seems like a good time of year to resurrect a song from last year.

The lyrics for this song were written around September 2008 (Completed and co-written with Sydney Rees in November/December '08). The same time these pictures were taken . I was on the road with E for Explosion and we had a "West Coast Tour" that stopped by Utah in September around my birthday. It was a bittersweet visit, and very difficult for me at the time. That's what the song is about. Having to leave friends and loved ones behind all over again. About a visit that was too short. Home for less than 24 hours after being away for 4 months...then gone again.

Anyway, in honor of it's one-year anniversary, I thought I'd put together a cheap little slideshow from the "West Coast Tour" and let people hear a rare b-side they can't hear anywhere else. Let me know what you think.

Tickets for September 3rd!!

I desperately need to sell some tickets for the show Sept. 3rd @ Kilby Court w/The Trademark and A Cassandra Utterance! They're only $6, so you don't have an excuse. I'm also doing a package deal: $10 for a ticket AND my latest cd, "Beautiful Divide." I've got ten tickets left that I need to get rid of. Email me at spiraldiarymusic@yahoo.com or message me at myspace.com/spiraldiary

We can figure out some way for me to get the tickets to you. Maybe even meet up the day of the show or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For Closure

Here are some lyrics I've been working on lately...not quite completed. Still a work in progress.

The house you rest in is a frame that stands bare
The ceiling is cracked beyond repair
Your special someone is somewhere out there
Celebrating a new affair

This house has no insulation
Just drafts, cracks, leaks, and complications
I think it might be time for relocation
Don't you think you deserve a little dedication...
...for once?

There is nothing below the surface
There is no cellar, there are no circuits
You forfeit your future to pay the mortgage
and this old property is worthless

In the corner, there's an exposed wire
that was overlooked
It's going to spark and set this place on fire
We're both cooked
I'm gonna burn like the liar I am

There's a shortage of lumber and bricks
So you settled for a shelter of straws and sticks
Now you've got a big bad wolf and no insurance
When this house falls, you'll be crushed in it

You can dig a new hole
Find a new soul
Lay a new foundation
I'll let you have my dishonest skeleton
You can swing that wrecking ball
You can break my bones and build again
You can paint the walls with my blood and organs

Let me save you a little time...
There is nothing below the surface

What you see is what you get
What you see is all you get with me

Writing update...

Hey everybody,

So I've had a little trouble writing and finishing up lyrics for songs, but I think I've come out of it. I just need to turn off the TV every once and awhile and do something productive. I'm still working on the Winter EP occasionally. Originally, the plan was an Oct. 1st CD release because that date has some significance to me and the CD in particular. However, I'm thinking it might be too close to the last CD release, which was just 2 1/2 months ago in June. I'm hoping to book a show the 1st or maybe that weekend where I'll headline and give people a little preview of the songs that are going to be on the new EP. Keep checking back for that. Anyway, here are the tentative song titles of everything that's in the running for the winter EP. I'll be picking 8 again. It's a good number.

The Best Answer pt. 2
The Audition
Disconnected
Untitled Dark Piano song**
Don't Turn Around (ADD)*
The Difference
Forget You*
Home
For Closure (House)*
Ever So Neatly (Shrink)*
2 Birds, 1 Stone
October First
Perfect Circle
Remorseless*
Endor*
Charmed*
Rearrange*
Hold The Door*
Distance and Detachment**
* - Still needs re-tooling
** - Far from finished

Then possibly the b-sides from Beautiful Divide:
Serendipity
Island
Complete
White Flag

It's a lot of songs, but hopefully it makes for a stronger album in the end. I want to post some of the instrumentals on here as a preview, but I'm not sure how to just put a quicktime wav in...I'll try to figure it out.

HELP ME PLAY A SHOW WITH TAKING BACK SUNDAY AND BLINK 182!

So there's a concert going on next month with Taking Back Sunday and Blink 182. I grew up listening to Blink 182, they inspired all my early bands. Now, Taking Back Sunday is easily one of my favorite bands of all time...to be able to play with them would be a dream come true. I think I would die happy if it happened.

Anyway, I play guitar with Allred and we're in the running to open the show in September at the McKay Events Center. So you just need to click on the link below and vote for Allred.

You can vote twice a day. You'll click once, the page will refresh, and you can click again. Eventually, the vote button will disappear and it will say "Thanks for voting." That means you've voted your max for the day. Please remember each day to put in your two votes. Like I said, it would be a dream come true. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Help us achieve it.

Vote for Allred.

Thank you so much.

Bedroom Recording of Room 1019...

...complete with high pitched noise from the cheap laptop mic!

I guess I should explain this song a little bit. I don't want to go into great detail because I'd like to protect myself and others involved. But let's just say it was a night gone horribly wrong.

Poor judgment from both sides.
Poor planning.
Terrible timing.
I should've known better.
"Everything is perfect until you get there."

The rest I'm sure you can figure out on your own. It's pretty straight forward.

Judges' Choice!

I'm happy to say that I was picked as the winner of the "Judges' Choice" for this summer's Songwriter Showdown. "Audience Choice" went to Willy Eklof who put on a great set. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that came out to support. But most of all, the people at Muse. Muse is a perfect atmosphere for me...and they have great grilled cheese!

Also, I'd like to thank the other people who played. And did a GREAT job. I'm pretty disappointed that I won actually because I like being a part of these Songwriter Showdowns because you get a chance to be exposed to new talent/crowds. There's also none of the hostile feel you sometimes get with Battle of the Bands. Everyone's very talented and very supportive. I'll definitely still attend future showdowns. This is getting long. I just really wanted to say...

Thank You

Dave

Katy Perry vs. Spiral Diary...grudge match.

...so Katy Perry wrote this song about me, apparently. I'm not sure how to feel.
I mean, I may "pms like a bitch" but that doesn't mean she has the right to tell everybody!

Anyway, I thought I'd tell my side of the story with a song called "Boomerang."
Sometimes I can't help being "hot and cold", Katy.

Take some time to compare lyrics...

Spiral Diary - Boomerang

The corner bank's faded LED says it's just past 7:50
Doors should be opening any minute now
I hold my breath just to get it knocked out of my chest
She is in my head and under my skin

Are we creatures of comfort and convenience
Or do these common coincidences have a deeper meaning?

Walking slowly up the block
You're a mirage that I could've sworn was long gone
Turn around
Make an unscheduled stop
Building tension against the clock
My breath is gone again

This feels too right to be so wrong
Wherever we go, the other follows
This feels too wrong to be so right
We take off
We collide
... we fall again
... we boomerang

There is just something about the angles carved in us
We're thrown, we spin, and we return to the same spot we were tossed
I knew that I could not trust myself
But you said, "Dear, please don't flatter yourself"

If this is right I don't wanna be wrong
If this is wrong I don't wanna be right
If this is right I don't wanna be wrong
I don't wanna be right
I don't wanna be wrong all the time

Katy Perry - Hot N Cold

You change your mind
Like a girl changes clothes
Yeah you, PMS
Like a bitch
I would know

And you over think
Always speak
Cryptically

I should know
That you're no good for me

Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in then you're out
You're up then you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up
(you) You don't really want to stay, no
(but you) But you don't really want to go-o
You're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in then you're out
You're up then you're down

We used to be
Just like twins
So in sync
The same energy
Now's a dead battery
Used to laugh bout nothing
Now your plain boring

I should know that
You're not gonna change

Someone call the doctor
Got a case of a love bi-polar
Stuck on a roller coaster
Can't get off this ride

...so what are YOUR thoughts?

Songwriter SHOWDOWN.

You guys should come. I'm playing friday!

Update...

I need to get better about writing on this thing, but I'm not sure what people want to hear about. Song meanings? Recording updates? Show stuff? Anyway, I thought I'd update you guys on what I've been doing.

Last night, I wiped the dust off the Winter EP mixes and started doing some editing. Some songs are still not completed because I'm having a little bit of writer's block. Not enough drama going on lately. And I think songs about being bored are probably boring. I'm also going to start cleaning up some B-sides so they'll sound respectable when I decide to release them after the Winter EP.

Also, I listened through my first album "Wake of Someday" today. It's been awhile. I guess that cd's not as awful as I thought. You guys should try to make it to a show because there are only about 40 copies left and I'm never going to re-press that cd (...unless maybe they're suddenly high in demand, but I don't foresee that happening). If you're too lazy to come to a show, you can still download all the tracks off my myspace. There's a link in the "sounds like" section.

Until next time...

take care

Best Answer pt. 2

I lost my grip on something precious
It slipped through my bare fist
My indecision might have cost me
The most exquisite riches

My days are joyless
My nights are even worse
My skies are overcast
My room is even darker

One thing is certain now

I can’t let go

Listen closely for the whistle in the distance
Our locomotive is making its way over these mountains
Somewhere along the tracks, I tripped
And fell off

I can’t catch up

I am a vagrant now who begs for ignorance
Please ma’am, won’t you fill this cup with a couple common cents/sense
Trapped in this valley, I won’t get out
So much to say, but I’m not sure how
One thing is certain now

I can’t let go

Take away this knowledge of everything I cherished
Everything I once possessed
But foolishly relinquished

What a week...

It's been a crazy week.
Monday: Practice
Tuesday: Allred show @ The Circuit
Wednesday: Allred show @ Velour
Thursday: Recording ("Remember The Time")
Friday: Spiral Diary Show @ Muse

The shows were great. Last night at Muse was awesome. 3 Blocks From Heartache, Nate Baldwin, and Bynow played great sets. And it was cool to have a few people there who were singing along to almost every song. Lots of fun. Can't wait to play Muse again in mid-July.

So here's a little something I've come up with over the last couple of days. It's definitely cheesy, but I had to honor the man who made GREAT music.

The Fall/Winter 2nd EP

So for those of you who didn't know, "Beautiful Divide" was the first of my two part series, "Better know an EP". In this installment, we'll be learning about the Fall/Winter EP I'm working on. Go fightin' autumns! (Colbert Report, anyone?)

In the beginning, I had around 25 songs or so and I wasn't sure I wanted to do a full length. Also, I wasn't sure all of the songs would fit well together. Then I had the idea to split the songs into two categories: Summer and Winter. The songs that ended up on "Beautiful Divide" were the obvious summer songs. Brighter, bouncier, more acoustic, etc.

I still have a ton of songs left over for the winter/fall EP which I'm hoping to release in October/November. This next cd will be a little more melancholy, dark, with more piano/electric guitar in place of acoustic. I almost feel like I should've waited and done the happier EP AFTER the downer, but there are still some songs I feel really good about that will be on the next EP. Hopefully, it's just as well received. (I can never tell if people prefer heavy/emotional or light/happy. So I'll just do BOTH)

Just to give you guys a little something, these are the songs that are in the running for the Winter EP (with tentative song titles):

The Best Answer pt. 2
The Audition
Disconnected
Untitled Industrial/Piano song*
Did You Find*
The Difference
Forget You*
Home
House*
Love Doctor
2 Birds, 1 Stone
October First
Perfect Circle
Remorseless*
Endor*
Charmed*

Then possibly a couple of the b-sides from Beautiful Divide:
Serendipity
Complete
White Flag

(*=incomplete)

Eliminating songs and picking the last 8 will be a lot harder this time around, but hopefully all those options make a great CD. Stay tuned for updates...maybe some rough demos of things to come.

Beautiful Divide Thank Yous

I just wanted to take the time to say some more Thank You's to everyone that made "Beautiful Divide" and the special cd release possible. Unfortunately, due to the constraints of time/space on the CD, I wasn't able to include specific thank you's and lyrics. That's the point of this blog. For things I'm not able to say on stage/in the liner notes. So here they are:

Thank You...(in alphabetical order)

Allison Hamnett: For helping me with the balloons.
Ask for the Future: For playing. For putting me on their awesome cd release show even though I couldn't bring any new fans for them.
Ben Sorensen: For mastering the cd. It was short notice and a quick turnaround. Sounds great.
Cailie Ercanbrack: For helping me promote.
Chad Braithwaite: For taking great pics. Being a good guy and designing some awesome posters.
Cody Farnsworth: For being a crash test dummy. Being able to listen to countless demos of the same songs over and over and somehow manage to not hate it. Also, for helping choose the final track listing. "Boomerang" wouldn't have made it onto the cd without his vote.
Corey Fox: For giving Utah the best venue in the state. Also, giving me a place to test out my new stuff (open mic) and just a great place to see great bands. And for helping me brainstorm epic ways to make the cd release something to remember.
Dad: For providing the great video footage of the CD Release.
Dazh Love: For being supportive and helping with merch.
Drew Hamnett: For helping me pick the final track list. You saved "Kentucky" from getting the axe.
Dustin Plake: For playing the show, always being great, and for all the good times we've had at Muse.
John Allred: For always being supportive and teaching.
Katie Hunsaker: For always taking pictures at shows.
Lisa George: For helping me promote.
Maile Hamnett: For helping with the balloons/putting up with my merch-area-hogging.
Mark @ ELS Productions: For saving my life. For the fastest turn-around on digi-packs he's ever ever ever done. I wouldn't have had ANY cds at the show if it wasn't for this man going above and beyond.
Mom: For putting up with the noise always coming from the basement and for always being supportive of my foolish dreams.
Nate Smeding: For helping me pick the final track list: And for being an amazing drummer, as well as being one of the most positive/awesome people I know.
Natty Coleman: For all the graphic design/artwork you did for the cd. I've never been a part of such a visually amazing cd. It looks better than I could've possibly imagined. And I don't care what you say, I still owe you money.
Sheyn Love: For always being supportive of my music. For providing his incredible musical talents to the show, and making the songs sound even better live.
Riley Hamnett: For helping me figure out the final track order. And for letting me pick his brain about booking/myspace/promotion.
Sam Sorensen: For pointing me in the direction of his brother, so I could have a more polished CD. And for being a good friend and a great musician.
Shirts Illustrated/Teara: For helping me get t-shirts done for the first time ever. They look amazing. Also, thanks for putting up with my obsessive perfectionist-tendencies.
Tacia Coleman: For helping me with the balloons.
The Trademark: For playing. For taking me out on the road with them and teaching me most of what I know. Also, for being the sweetest band around.
Trista Markland: For putting up with my ultra-stress around the merch area and letting me steal the whole table.

Hopefully, I didn't leave anyone out. But again. I can't thank all of you enough.
